Cleaning Grease

Your appliances all play a vital role in the household, and especially more so during winter and the holiday season. With family, friends, and others close to you all gathering together and enjoying both festivities and home-cooked meals, your appliances can take a beating that requires regular attention and the occasional dreaded “deep cleaning” chore.

From the toaster to the coffee pot to the stovetop and deep inside the oven, you may have noticed grease build-up that a simple wiping off doesn’t handle efficiently.

Add to all of this the fact that hot cooking grease at certain temperatures becomes airborne and lands on all surfaces in the kitchen. The amount of greasy soils that can accumulate can be tenacious if you don’t stay in front of it.

So — what’s your game plan?

Cleaning products

What you need is a degreasing product, something that breaks down congealed grease on the surfaces of appliances, counter-tops, everywhere.

While you can purchase products from your favorite store, you can also make your own. If you take ¼ cup of dish detergent, add in 1-2 ounces of ammonia, and mix it all with 16 ounces of hot water, and for a bonus add a scoop of baking soda, you have an excellent tool to fight grease.

Application

Now it is time to go to work. Get your cleaning solution ready and start scrubbing. Let the product do the work. If needed, wet out the areas of concern and allow the solution to do its job. Keep wiping, keep soaking up the grease, don’t spare those paper towels!

A better idea

While everyone wants to do is simply buy a miracle ingredient from their grocery store and just get the job done. While that might work, it’s not always the best option. It takes much more to keep your home grease and soil free and healthier for your family.

Basics of Vacuuming

If you have carpet or rugs, you have a vacuum cleaner. A vacuum is absolutely necessary to keep your valuable carpet and rugs clean of particulate or dry soil.

While vacuuming may seem like a basic housekeeping chore and simple to do, the biggest challenge is getting out the vacuum and actually putting it to use.

Frequency

How often you vacuum depends on the size of your family, and this includes pets. As a general rule, you should vacuum the main areas in your home, such as the living room, hallways, and other high traffic areas, one time each week per occupant.

For example, if you have four people and one dog in your family, vacuum five times per week, in those high traffic areas. For low-trafficked areas, once per week should suffice. This might seem extensive and perhaps unnecessary, but it keeps your carpet and rugs virtually free of dry soil buildup.

How to vacuum

You might be thinking, “You just plug it in and push it across the floor.” Which is basically what you do. The problem is how fast you move and how much overlapping you cover when running the vacuum.

While you may push the vacuum forward fast, slow down when you pull it towards you. This way the beater bar, if your vacuum has one, has a chance to work loose the soils. Also, overlap several inches from side to side so you have complete coverage of the floor.

Choosing the best vacuum

Quality matters when choosing a good vacuum cleaner. The cheaper ones at department stores may work fine for a while, but they quickly lose efficiency and often break down. Look at the reviews of any vacuum cleaner you are contemplating and spend a few more dollars on a superior model. Your carpet and rugs will be better off in the long run.

Choosing a vacuum with a beater bar is smart. Especially with thick pile carpet, it helps remove more dry soil. Some choose vacuum cleaners with a bagless option. If you use a vacuum cleaner with a bag, change it out when about half full, for maximum efficiency. Purchase plenty of replacement bags and have them on hand for this purpose.

Get with the pros

Cleaning companies, especially those who specialize in carpet and rug cleaning, can help you choose a quality vacuum. Get their input. After all, it pays to call a pro!

3 Best Ways to Kick Off Spring

As winter rolls into spring, you may want to concentrate on fixing, organizing, and cleaning what’s outside — after all, most say that working in the sun is better than working under a light bulb — but there are some tasks inside that just shouldn’t be ignored.

Here are a few that will help your indoor air quality the minute you handle them.

Dusty decisions

A cold, hard winter means the house has been closed up and not aired out. The natural tendency is to think there is no dust coming in. That’s not true. Spring is a good time to thoroughly dust your entire home, picking up small items off table and desktops, cleaning off the tops of window frames, and don’t forget the baseboards.

Dust the entire home. Be sure to use rags or towels that will collect the dust, instead of spreading it around or pushing it off surfaces onto the floor, where you will just walk on it and kick it around.

All this work means you will be rewarded with less exposure to indoor airborne allergens.

Ducts and vents

Your heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system works hard to keep you comfortable, and while it does that, the ductwork gets dusty and dirty. You don’t see it, so the tendency is you don’t worry about it.

Take off a vent or two and inspect. Get out the flashlight. Take a white towel and push it into the ductwork. Does it come out brown? While you can clean the vents, it’s virtually impossible to clean the ductwork yourself. You need to call a professional for the duct cleaning work.

Vacuum and sweep

This is a good time to get out your vacuum, inspect it thoroughly and clean it up, and start vacuuming everything. Every square inch of carpet you can get to and move as much furniture as you can. You would be amazed how much dust can build up under furniture over the winter.

Besides vacuuming the carpet, get a vacuum tool that can handle the hard floors as well. If you use a regular broom, you will stir up the dust and put it up in your breathing space. If you must sweep, find a tool that doesn’t “whisk” the dust up.

A real clean

When you realize the job is tough and you are ready to throw in the towel, do the right thing. Call your favorite cleaning company. After all, it pays to call a pro!

Your home has plenty of areas for dirt and grime to hide. Locating them may seem easy. Cleaning them effectively is something else.

After a week, you will still be amazed at how much residue has built up in there. Imagine what could happen after a few months!

And once a month, give your entire bathroom a close scrutiny and look for all those nooks and crannies that can be the host of soil. This could be behind the toilet, in the corners of shower stalls, where the soap resides on the bathtub edge. All these areas could use a good scrubbing each month, if not more frequently.

Prevention of Seasonal Allergies

The prevention of seasonal allergies is a top priority for millions of people around the world. In many areas of the United States seasonal allergies begin in February and often last until the early summer (and in many cases even through fall).
​Tree pollination begins the earliest but is quickly followed by grass pollination as soon as spring begins. Ragweed, a plant that grows wild almost everywhere, tends to develop in late summer and early fall. Mild winter temperatures can lead to earlier pollination of many plants. Further, a rainy spring can also promote advanced plant growth and can cause an increase in mold. The advancement of mold often causes symptoms to last well into the fall.

Ways to Prevent Seasonal Allergies

As noted, spring means flowers blooming and trees exploding with pollen. If you are among those unfortunate people that are impacted by seasonal allergies, it also means sneezing, congestion, a runny nose and other annoying symptoms. Seasonal allergies (AKA Hay Fever) — makes you feel absolutely miserable. But before you throw out all of your flowers and greenery try the following instead.

Minimize your exposure to allergy-inducing activators. 

• As much as possible take advantage of staying indoors on dry, windy days. The opportune time to go outside is after a thorough rain that has helped to clear pollen from the air.
• Enlist help with lawn mowing, weed pulling and other gardening chores that stir up allergens. Hire or enlist someone to do these things for you. If you just enjoy doing them yourself then wear an allergy mask and do this type work early in the morning when dew is still visible. 
• Change clothes after you have been outside even if only for a few minutes and shower to rinse pollen from your skin and hair.
• Don't hang laundry outside — pollen can stick to sheets and towels.

Shouldn't You Replace Carpets with Hardwood Flooring?

As a professional carpet and floor cleaner I can add a lot of insights into this question.

It is absolutely true that hardwood floors do not "capture" dust mites and other allergy-inducing materials. But this doesn't mean you must go to the huge expense of ripping out your carpets and replacing them with hardwoods.

Why?

The following list of reasons should bring some clarity to the subject.

1. Dust isn't captured by hardwoods like it is by carpeting and area rugs. That is very true. BUT dust does lay on it and is easily stirred into the air by simply walking over it or sweeping it. This means that as you move around the house you are stirring the allergens around and into the air. Therefore you must constantly sweep and/or swiffer the floors. On the other hand, carpet serves as a filter in a similar way that the filter for your heating and air conditioning system does. Yes, carpets "capture" allergens but this is actually a good thing because you are not stirring it around as you walk over it (because it is "captured"). So, if you are an allergy sufferer then rather than replace carpets with expensive hardwoods, simply purchase a high-quality, HEPA type vacuum cleaner and vacuum two ot three times a week. Frequent vacuuming prevents allergens from settling deeper into the carpet fibers. Vacuuming dust is much easier than sweeping and captures it into a bag or bagless container rather than sweeping it into a dust pan. I recommend a heavier vacuum cleaner for allergy sufferers. Heavier vacuum cleaners, like a Kirby, gets the roller brush deeper into the carpet thereby removing embedded dust. Lighter vacuums simply glide across the top of the carpet and merely remove surface dirt. Yes, Kirby's are more expensive (but not as expensive as replacing carpets with hardwoods by any stretch) but you can often can find them used on internet marketing sites like Facebook. Purchasing a new one is always the best choice but they are so well-made that even the used ones are often in excellent condition. Should you decide to purchase a Kirby, new or used, make sure you use the HEPA MICRON MAGIC BAGS. Just shop around. There are many great vacuums out there but you want a heavier one if you are an allergy sufferer. 
2. What's the first thing people do when they lay wood floors or buy a home with wood and tile floors throughout? Buy area rugs, right? Area rugs capture allergens in the same way as carpets do. So, they have not actually solved the allergy problem at all. I am often amazed at how many people call me for area rug cleaning (which is more expensive than cleaning wall-to-wall carpet) and have area rugs in literally every room of their home. Please do not misunderstand me. I love hardwood floors because they can be very beautiful. I have them in parts of my home. I also have area rugs in every room that has hardwoods. But my bedrooms and office are carpeted. My wife and I are both seasonal allergy sufferers. So, if you have area rugs, you are still capturing allergens. 
3. Since it is true that carpets capture allergens then it is also true that every other fabric does so as well. This includes curtains and draperies, mattresses, sofas, chairs, and every other piece of fabric in your home. Unless you replace every piece of furniture and window treatment with plastic or wood you still have the same allergy-capturing issue. And if you do, you will need to be constantly wiping and dusting to keep those allergens from swirling around. Makes perfect sense, doesn't it?

Best Advice for Seasonal Allergy Prevention

My best advice for preventing and minimizing seasonal allergies is to read and implement the bulleted list above. 
Next, give full consideration to the pros and cons of replacing carpeting with hardwoods. It may be the right choice for you but then again, I may have given you a better option. However, should you prefer hardwoods then minimize the number of areas rugs OR at the very least vacuum them two to three times per week with the type of vacuum cleaner recommended above. 

It's obvious that you will not replace all window treatments and furnishing with plastic or wood. This means that all fabrics need to be vacuumed regularly and thoroughly with attachment tools that come with higher quality vacuum systems like the Kirby. This practice will reduce allergens dramatically. 

Lastly, have carpets, areas rugs, furnishings, mattresses and all other fabricked materials professionally cleaned once a year at a minimum. This is the best way to remove all allergens and helps to prevent seasonal allergies and other bacteria-induced illnesses.

As you can see from this post, I am all about saving money. There are ways to prevent seasonal allergies that do not require going to the extreme expense or measures. How to Remove Hard Water Stains

Removing Hard Water Stains

Unsightly hard water stains can affect many surfaces and can be a challenge to remove.

Hard water stains are based on the mineral content of the water in a building or home. It all comes from the ground, so if mineral content is high in ground water, then mineral content in the water you use is going to be high.

Water softeners will solve this issue, but without a water softener system, you will occasionally deal with hard water stains and the challenges inherent with removing them.

Typical spot removers or household cleaners will not affect hard water stains, because they are mineral based. Here are some tips to remove them safely and enjoy a household free of hard water stains.

Identify

You will see hard water stains on sinks, around faucets, and even on textiles that are affected by a plain water spill. They are usually white but can be colored stains as well. If the stain is significant, you can even feel the texture of the stain. This means a bit more work may be involved removing the stain.

Remove

If the surface allows it (make sure you don’t scratch a hard surface and damage it) try scraping away the bulk of the hard water stain, if it has built up enough for you to do this.

For a cleaning agent, start safe and use plain white vinegar. Apply the vinegar to the surface and allow several minutes dwell time, remembering that vinegar can temporarily adversely affect copper surfaces. Scrub carefully and see if the vinegar is reacting with the hard water stain. This may remove most hard water stains.

If that doesn’t work, obtain a stronger acid, such as from your hardware store, that is for cleaning purposes. Wear safety gloves applicable for strong acid cleaners. Apply carefully and this should remove the hard water stain.

You can keep increasing the strength of the acid cleaner until the stain is removed, but always be careful with skin contact and vapors. Follow manufacturer directions.

Neutralize

As with any strong cleaning agent, neutralize after cleaning. This can be with a water rinse and drying with a towel. Very strong acid cleaners should be neutralized with a product for that specific purpose.

But when cleaning challenges are beyond your abilities, do the right thing. Call a professional cleaning company. After all, it pays to call a pro!

Most people want to get the best deal possible for professional services like carpet and floor cleaning. I completely understand that. Typically when someone calls me they want to know my "price" for cleaning a certain number of rooms. This is an indication that they assume that the lowest price offered is the right choice. They intend to call around until they find that low price. So they go ahead and book with the lowest priced company they can find. Unfortunately, because of the less-than-professional "cleaners" that are out there, going with lowest price can actually cost more money in the long run. Please keep this in mind, low price ALWAYS means low quality service. You may as well do it yourself.

Best ways to get the highest quality service and save BIG money

Don't Take the Lowest Price Offered

There are reasons you don't own the lowest-priced car, house, clothes, and countless other things. There are reasons you don't always order the lowest-priced meal from the menu. So, doesn't it make sense that there may be good reasons for not going with the lowest-priced professional carpet cleaning service. Please understand, I don't mean you need to go with the highest priced cleaner either ... more on that below.

Here's a few problems with the lowest-priced cleaner ...

• he will likely quote a price on the phone but change it when he arrives because your carpets are dirtier than he understood. He will need to add his "super-traffic lane cleaner" to really get it clean. This will cost LOTS more than originally quoted.
• he can't do high quality work at the lowest prices. Dedicated professional cleaners purchase industry recommended carpet detergents and cleaners. They are formulated with the right balance a PH cleaning agents and solvents. Professional cleaners have had training in the different types of cleaners and when, where, and how to use them. They are not "cheap." But they work and keep your carpets clean, healthy, and safe for your family. Paying a little more will get your carpets totally clean. If you go with the lowest priced cleaner your carpets may look clean when he leaves but will likely look dirty again within a week. No kidding! You may as well rent a Rug-doctor and do it yourself.

Don't Pay for Deodorizer

Deodorizers are profit-boosters for carpet cleaners; nothing more and nothing less. Carpet deodorizer cost literally pennies per gallon but these unscrupulous cleaners have no problem charging customers $14 per room and more. Deodorizer smells great when applied and comes in a variety of scents but the scent dissipates within hours after the cleaner leaves.

Deodorizer should be a free option for clients. They do not eliminate odors caused by pets or smoke. All they do is leave a nice scent in your home. If you have pet or smoke odor then an odor-eliminating process is required. Regular deodorizer will only mask odors for a few hours. This process does cost more and takes a skilled, experienced, and trained technician to handle it correctly. If you have these types of odors then tell the cleaning company when you call. This way you can get a price estimate as to what their odor elimination will cost. But never buy deodorizer unless you want to pay a lot of money for a scent that lasts a few hours.

Don't Pay to Have Carpets Protected Wall to Wall

Carpet protector, like ScotchGard, is indeed an excellent product. Protectors are always recommended by carpet cleaners because carpets are protected when they are made at the mill. Cleaning, vacuuming, regular traffic and wear eventually takes its toll and the protection gradually breaks down making stains and spots more difficult to remove. Reapplying the protector is a good idea BUT only within certain parameters.

Cleaners will always try to sell you wall-to wall protection. It is typically 50% of the cost to clean. So, let's say you get a price of $220 to clean 5 rooms, a hallway, and a set of stairs (too high but it is the average). The cost to protect wall-to-wall would be another $110 making the total ticket $330.

But most homeowners do not need wall-to wall protection. If you have young children you should have the main room they play in protected, such as a den, living room, or bonus room. These rooms get a lot of spills and should be protected so carpets clean easier. However, they do not need to be protected wall-to-wall. Only the open areas where the spills occur is needed. This means significant savings.

If your kids are older then you may only want traffic areas and the family room open areas protected. If you are in an empty-nest situation you may not need protection at all.

Honest cleaners will provide an assessment and audit of your carpet and offer a fair and favorable price for protection. Of course, protection is always recommended but remains optional.

Don't Call National Franchises

National franchises are easily discoverable. They usually advertise on the first page of Google. They are quite recognizable. One is known by its yellow vans. Another offers to leave zero residue. Another offers a chemical drying process. They each have great equipment and usually do excellent work. Their prices are always the highest by far and they always try to upsell customers on every conceivable service or product. Their technicians are usually fully-commissioned or at least partially commissioned and this is why they try to upsell so much. It means money in their pocket. I am not against providing extra services if it will benefit my customers; but I only offer additional services that a customer actually will benefit from. I can offer a lower price since I am already there and my equipment is set up. BUT, I only offer a service if it is indeed needed. National franchises turn huge profits trying to upsell everything possible.

With national franchises the cost is higher because they have HUGE overhead and business costs. These costs are passed on to YOU, the trusting customer.

Checkout the graphic below. It is an actual online cost estimator for a national franchise here in the Huntsville area. The cleaning is $188 for 6 areas of carpet. Another $99 for protector and $56 for deodorizer. Total ticket $343.

Remember, a big portion of this goes to cover their overhead. So, what would the cost actually be for the same service from a company like Kleaneasy?

$160 to clean the 6 areas (better than they will clean it).

How to Keep Your Carpets Cleaner After Professional Cleaning

Anyone who has carpets (or rugs) wants to keep them clean. Because stains and traffic patterns are so visible we all want them erased from existence. This the primary reason people have their carpets and area rugs professionally cleaned once or twice a  year.

Once the carpets have been professionally cleaned we always want to keep them as clean as possible. Here are a few tips to help keep carpets clean after they have been cleaned professionally.

Make Sure Your Vacuum is Set to the Proper Height

If your vacuum is set to a pile setting that is too low, it can damage the carpet. If the setting is too high it will not pick up most of the dirt. To set your vacuum to the proper height, set the beater bar to its highest level and lower it until the suction starts to move the vacuum forward. Vacuum two or three times per week whether carpets show dirt of not. This keeps "invisible" dirt from accumulating. 

Place Mats Inside and Outside All Entrance Doors

This may seem obvious but I clean in MANY homes that do not have door mats. The dirt and wear is very heavy just inside the door as people walk in with dirt and oils on the bottom of their shoes. Also, moisture from rain on shoes attracts more dirt and makes carpets much dirtier much faster. Placing door mats allows people to wipe their feet and reduce tracked-in dirt significantly. 

Clean Up Spills A.S.A.P.

Stains and spills don’t ordinarily require hiring a professional carpet cleaning service. This is particularly true if you clean them as soon as they happen. The reality is that if you get to a spill as soon as it happens there’s a very good chance you’ll be able to remove it with nothing more than some water and a microfiber cloth. Press a dry microfiber cloth over the spot until most of the moisture and color is absorbed, then blot with a second cloth until the rest is removed.   Be careful not to scrub because it can damage the carpet fibers. 

Develop a Freshen-Up Mindset and Save Money

So often people will call me for cleaning when their carpets or rugs are heavily soiled. Honestly, this isn't the best approach. Heavily soiled carpets are harder to clean, require much more effort, and the costs are significantly higher. If you have a more "maintenance" mindset you can have your carpets cleaned when they are just beginning to show that they require a professional carpet cleaning service. This saves time and money and also extends the life and usage of your carpets.
